In a bill signing ceremony at Horizon Science Academy in Des Moines, Governor Reynolds signed a new law to support for public charter schools. Under the new law, Senate File 2368, categorical funding for professional development and early intervention costs will follow students to their public charter school. The law also prohibits traditional public schools from restricting the sale of property to another educational institution, including public charter schools. Finally, it will allow students who attend charter schools to participate in extracurricular activities in their district of residence if their school does not have the activity.
During the ceremony, the Governor announced a $7 million Start-up Fund to help public charter schools pay for initial infrastructure projects. The grant program will award up to $500,000 for new charter schools and up to $200,000 for existing charter schools.
